Building on the Canal Network

Fort Lauderdale’s defining feature is its hundreds of miles of navigable waterways, which create highly saturated, sandy soil conditions throughout the city.

The Problem: Fluctuating water tables, boat wakes, and tidal flow lead to severe soil washout, slab undermining, and accelerated seawall degradation.

The Solution: We utilize deep foundations, advanced polyurethane soil stabilization techniques, and upgraded marine infrastructure to secure properties against settling and flooding.

Structural Engineering Fort Lauderdale

Soil Stabilization & Foundation Repair

The sandy soils along Fort Lauderdale's canals are highly prone to erosion and settling.

Diagnosis: We use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and soil testing to identify loose zones and voids under your foundation.

The Solution: For undermining and washouts, we inject high-density expansive polyurethane foam under the slab to fill the void and lift it back to level. For deeper instability, we use Helical Piles to bypass loose sand and anchor into a competent stratum.

Concrete Contractor Fort Lauderdale

Durable Concrete for Saturated Environments

Concrete placed in Fort Lauderdale must resist constant moisture from high water tables and saltwater exposure.

Proper Cover: We ensure structural rebar is never exposed to the earth, maintaining the specific clearance required by code to prevent rust and internal cracking.

Slab-on-Grade Expertise: We properly compact the subgrade soil to prevent future settlement—a critical step in Broward County’s loose, sandy environments to prevent hollow voids from forming beneath driveways and foundations.

Marine Construction Fort Lauderdale

The 5.0 ft NAVD88 Tidal Barrier Standard

To combat sea-level rise and seasonal King Tides, the City of Fort Lauderdale has strictly updated its tidal barrier ordinance.

Elevation Compliance: We engineer and construct seawalls to meet the new minimum top elevation of 5.0 feet NAVD88.

Kick-Out Prevention: We replace failing walls that allow tidal waters to breach your property, utilizing deep embedment to refusal and advanced anchoring systems to prevent kick-out failure at the mudline.

Custom Pool Construction Fort Lauderdale

Canal-Side Pools & Wind Load Engineering

Building a pool next to a Fort Lauderdale canal requires careful harmonization with the seawall structure and strict adherence to hurricane codes.

Wind Bracing: Our screen enclosures are engineered to meet Broward County’s HVHZ wind speeds, utilizing marine-grade stainless steel fasteners to prevent failure during storms.

Hydrostatic Relief: We install standard hydrostatic relief valves to prevent the pool shell from floating out of the highly saturated ground when drained.

Flood Barriers South Florida project

Flood Barriers & Protection Fort Lauderdale

Canal Overflow & Tidal Flooding Protection

With rising water levels in Fort Lauderdale's extensive canal network, seasonal high tides increasingly breach seawalls, sending water directly into low-lying streets and waterfront properties.

Opening & Perimeter Defense: We provide watertight, modular flood barriers tailored for waterfront homes, securing vulnerable entry points like sliding glass doors, garage openings, and low-elevation patios against sudden canal overflow.

Rapid Deployment: When tidal flooding is forecast, our lightweight aluminum panel systems can be quickly dropped into pre-installed, permanent mounting channels, ensuring your home remains dry even when the surrounding streets flood.

I had water damage in my house from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Raising my house was out of the question, so I decided to look at flood barriers. I did a websearch and identified 3 possible choices. Damn Easy showed demos on installation and testing. The placement and set up of barriers definitely looked like something I could handle by myself. I did not want to do the concrete work and post installations and asked Damn Easy for help. Damn Easy sent me the name of a local contractor (Take Off Construction Management) that could do the installation. Take Off contacted me and set up an appointment. The gentlemen knew the product well and we decided on 4 locations. Before I signed the contract, I checked 3 references. Each reference gave me very positive feedback. I signed the contract and the project was a go.
The construction crew came, in the rain mind you, and built the frames for the concrete work. They were very professional and returned the next day to pour the concrete. The barriers were ordered and delivered to my home. Take Off secured the shipment and returned in a few days to complete the installation. The barriers installation was completed in one one day. The members of the construction crew showed me how to install the barriers and posts, remove and store the barriers, show how to care for the seals, etc. I am so pleased with Take Off Construction Management and it’s employees. The whole project took about 2.5 weeks.

I hired Take Off Construction to finish the construction of a 10′ X 20′ enclosed porch that replaced a screen room destroyed by hurricane Ian. They replaced a contractor that was not adhering to FL building code and had made many mistakes. Take Off Const. took the room down to the studs and rebuilt it properly. Scheduled work was done promptly and professionally. Their work passed all Lee Co. inspections on the first visit. I highly recommend them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to raise my Fort Lauderdale seawall?

Yes, if you are building a new seawall, if your current wall is in substantial disrepair (over 50% damage), or if you have been cited for tidal flow breaching your property, you must meet the new 5.0 ft NAVD88 standard.

In Fort Lauderdale, this is often caused by soil washout from heavy rains or fluctuating canal water levels slowly eroding the sandy subgrade beneath the concrete.

Yes. All our structural and enclosure designs strictly comply with the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone wind load and impact requirements.
